A Twayhem on Twitter

mayhem

I’m not very pleased, the world of Twitter is becoming a mayhem. I really don’t know where to start.

There are no clear “game rules” on Twitter. People knew what ICQ was for, they knew what MSN Messenger was for, what Blogger and Facebook and MySpace and Digg it were for … many of Twitter’s users do not know what the service is for. Others rushed to Twitter like GREAT here is a free media that I can use to market and PR and sell my products, others use it just because it’s the talk of the hour. I remember a friend of mine created a Twitter account and his first tweet was “WTF”.

Suddenly everyone is an expert or an entrepreneur or owns a small business or a CEO or a SEO specialist, everyone is a GURU, everyone is a marketer, it just doesn’t end.

If I made a dollar from each twitterer that claims he can help me make money, I'd be a millionaire.

I cannot understand either how a person can follow 10,000 people! Many Tweeps have so many followers just because they go on following others to have others following them back. Other twitterers follow people then unfollow them after they are followed!!!

I had people follow me, then by the time I checked their profile to decide if I should follow them or not, I realized they already unfollowed me! Many people followed me without even reading my biography. I’m from Dubai, into PR, Tech, Social Media, Blogging, Games and Discovery Channel, why the hell would I care about a person selling foodstuff in Arizona or the elections in Iran?!!!

twitter_logo

What’s next for Twitter? I think Twitter needs an extreme makeover in order to maintain and increase its value. More options, more control over spam, scammers, technology abusers.

Also people need to decide why they are using Twitter, and who should follow them and why.

We definitely need Twitter to organize people into categories in terms of interest and geographical location. We also need Twitter to clearly educate the mass about the service and how it can help us in our daily life.

I use Twitter to engage in a global intelligent conversation, I use it to meet new wise people. I’m not going to sign up for your gym because I don’t live in Istanbul, I’m not going to vote for your friend because I’m not from London and I graduated from college long time ago, I’m not going to buy your pills because I’m not on a diet. Now that you know that, please unfollow me.

Dubai & The Financial Crisis - DUBAI IS NOT FALLING

Burj Dubai Lightning

In the past few months we’ve seen tens of articles about the effect of the financial crisis on Dubai. The way the articles were written reflected a certain level of comfort, like thank God Dubai is falling.

But is Dubai really falling? How bad is the situation in Dubai? Well I’m right here in Dubai, and people are still shopping. Only a few thousands in Dubai lost their jobs so far; a very minimal percentage of the work force in comparisons to other places. A bit over 50% of the construction projects in Dubai stopped, is this a lot? 60% of the world’s cranes were in Dubai, now Dubai holds 20% to 30% of the world’s cranes. The situation is bad, but it’s not as bad as some are claiming.

Dubai didn’t just boom because it got lucky or won a lotto, only 2% of Dubai’s revenue comes from oil. Dubai boomed because it’s a natural business hub connecting Europe and USA to the Middle East and Asia. Consumer spending declined indeed, but as long as there are consumers in the Middle East and Asia, Dubai is going to be ok.

dubai-clouds

Most of Dubai’s population either work for Multinationals or for the Government. The government is not going to lay off any one, and Multinational companies are fighting tooth and nail to survive. They are not selling in the USA, they are not selling in Europe, they are selling in the Middle East and Asia.

Take Saudi for example, how much did the crisis affect Saudi? minimal. How much did the crisis affect Egypt? minimal again, Egypt has been in crisis for the past 30 years! this crisis didn’t do much harm. What about India? What about Pakistan? Businesses in Dubai exist because they use Dubai to sell to other regions, and those regions are still buying.

Dubai is a link between the West and the East, Dubai became what it is today because of that, of course with the support of intelligent leadership. Dubai is definitely stumbling, but God Willing it’s not going to fall.

What’s the worse that could happen? Nothing really, remember that Dubai is part of the United Arab Emirates, its sister state Abu Dhabi has the most cash surplus on earth after KSA and is able to pay Dubai’s debt in one check if needed.

Tunisian Crash Pilot Sentenced 10 years for a Prayer Pause

Reuters reported a story today about a pilot who got convicted because he paused to pray while the plane was crashing, rather than taking emergency measures before crash landing. The crash happened in sea off the cost of Sicily and killed 16 people.

crashed plane

First of all, I really am not sure if the pilot is to blame at all or not, people get religious when they start bleeding, but what I’m sure about is that his 10 years sentence is definitely unfair.

As a pilot, he should be responsible and make sure he does his job properly and should have not paused to pray. This is even the case from an Islamic point of view, but again, we can never tell how bad the situation was on the plane as the disaster was happening.

Do you think the minute the engine blew up, the pilot just left the control room to pray or did he try to do something about it? maybe he only started praying when he got convinced there isn’t anything else he can do. After all the plane crashed on sea killing only 16 people rather than 200+ who were on it.

Like I said, I agree that the man should not pause for prayer instead of doing his job, but does he really deserve 10 years in prison? Maybe he already did all he can.

Fear of death during a crash, plus guilt, plus jail?

What do you think?

Earth Hour, I Promise …

VoteEarth_WVE

Saturday the 28th of March at 8:30 PM wherever you are, is Earth Hour.

2,398 cities, towns and municipalities in 83 countries have already committed to VOTE EARTH for Earth Hour 2009, as part of the worlds’ first global election between Earth and global warming.

Let’s all show our support and switch off our lights during Earth Hour. It’s simple, but it does make a difference. I personally would like to mark this year’s earth hour as the hour I begin to care more about earth.

  • I promise not to use my lights, my AC, unless I need to
  • I promise not to keep my PC on all night like I always do
  • I promise start recycling, where possible
  • I promise not to litter at all when camping or hiking or swimming
  • I promise to always remember that it’s my duty as an inhabitant of this beautiful creation to take care of it and keep it clean

Earth hour map of cities

People of Dubai, UAE, the Middle East, Asia, Europe, America, Australia and Earth, let’s all vote Earth!

God bless you, and God bless Earth.

Guantanamo Guard Converts To Islam: What’s New?!

GuantanamoGuard_IN01_vl-vertical

Newsweek reported in their latest issue a story about Terry Holdbrooks, a Guantanamo guard who converted to Islam. It’s not new to see people move from one opposite to the other, there is an endless number of stories about people who convert to Islam, some of them are popular and some of them are not. How do you think Islam achieved 1.8 billion followers in less than 1500 years? Islam is the largest religion on earth. I know there are 2.1 billion Christians on earth but over half of them do not practice Christianity.

People convert to Islam because they “find peace” in this religion. I’m sure some of you will not be able to digest that, but it’s true. Bin Laden and his few thousand followers do not represent Islam.

Anyways, below is a list of popular converts to Islam that you probably know:

Those are the ones I know and remember now but you can refer to a complete list of celebrities and historic figures who converted to Islam on this link.

PlayStation 3 Vs. Xbox 360: Why the latter?

Playstation 3 Xbox 360

(5 months after writing the below post, I bought a PS3, it was a big disappointment)

----

I always get phone calls from friends and strangers asking me what is better, the Xbox 360 or the PlayStation 3?

In my lifetime, I’ve owned an Atari, Family Game, GoldStar 3DO, Game Gear, Sega Genesis, PlayStation 1, PlayStation 2, PSP, Game Boy, Nintendo Wii and a super gaming PC. I was never as addicted to gaming and as happy with a console as I am with my Xbox 360. I literally gave up PC gaming and I don’t think I will ever get back to it.

I’ve been an Xbox 360 owner for the past 3 years, and I’m going to stick to that until further notice.

There are many factors that made the 360 a winner, and none of these factors are my own opinion, they are all facts:

  • Games: The Xbox 360 has much more games than the PlayStation 3. So far there are approximately 600 Xbox 360 games and 442 PS3 games. www.gamespot.com, the leading gaming website listed (to date) 273 games for the 360 under “Top Games” and 169 for the PS3. Also so far, over 1200 games have been announced for the 360 (either released, or to be released) while only 700 games were announced for the PS3
  • Graphics: Although the PS3 supports a higher resolution than the 360, the 360 was able to achieve better graphics in many games. In the past 3 years, I personally watched tens of video reviews on the web and realized that the graphics in the 360 are always either exactly similar to those in the PS3 or better. Check out Fallout 3’s review on Gamespot to get an idea of what I’m talking about. Gamespot also carried out 4 detailed comparisons in the past 3 years between the 2 consoles, the latest is available on this link
  • Stability and Speed: It’s very well documented in reviews that 360 games are faster to load. This is very apparent in games like Far Cry 2 and Fight Night 3. The Xbox 360 also allows the gamer to install the game to the hard drive, and play it from there. This means blazing fast loading times and less frame cuts. The Xbox 360 is backed up with a 3 cores processor vs. 8 core processor in the PS3. This doesn’t only mean games are easier to develop on the 360, but also faster to program and less likely to include bugs
  • Online: Microsoft has way more experience than Sony in the online industry. This helped Microsoft offer a better online environment for the Xbo360. Although online gamming using the 360 is not free (It’s free on the PS3) it still wins the battle. Xbox 360 offers more features, faster browsing and is much easier to use. It’s also very important to note that Microsoft’s Live Market Place for the 360 offers a dazzling number of movies, TV Shows and Arcade games available for download at any time. The Xbox 360 also streams news and features related to the console, giving the user a TV experience. Microsoft have also been sponsoring online gaming tournaments on the console, offering winners valuable prizes
  • Prices: The Xbox 360 is available at 199$ for the Arcade console, 299$ for the 60 GB edition and 399$ for the 120 GB edition. The PS3 costs 399$ for the 80 GB model and 499$ for the 160 GB model. Games on the 360 can be much cheaper, since the 360 was launched almost 1 year before the PlayStation 3, you will find “Classic” games in stores near you. Those games are usually available at half the price of the newly released games
  • Accessories: Both consoles offer a range of accessories like a Web Cam, a remote control and extra hard drives, but you can get a bit more than that on the Xbox 360 like a Messenger Kit, Bluetooth headset and a range of covers to change the look of the console

simmessengerkit002 simscreenshot1 xbox_360_faceplates_270605

I know some people decide to get the PlayStation 3 because it has a Blu-ray player, you need to remember that playing movies is not why you buy a gaming console. Another factor that makes people choose to buy the PS3 is the Wi-Fi support, I would like to remind those that connecting to the web through an Ethernet cable is faster than Wi-Fi and more stable. If you need WiFi, you can still get a Wi-Fi card for your Xbox 360.

I’ve combined below a list showing all Xbox 360 and PS3 games that received ratings between 8.5 and 10 out of 10. You will see if you look at it how the 360 has much more games that received a rating of 8.5 and above on Gamespot.

Blogging tips for you, if you don’t wanna die in jail

An Iranian Blogger, popular in Persia, died in jail recently after a drug overdose (Prescribed by the prison doctor). Omidreza Misrsayafi, was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison last month for insulting “Ayatollah Al Khomeini”. Omidreza actually attempted suicide a few days before he passed away.

news-graphics-2007-_634918a

A blogger in jail, this is not very new folks. Many bloggers disappeared from several countries like Egypt, Malaysia and China for various reasons. I am not going to blog about “Freedom of Expression” as I don’t want to die in jail either. Instead, I would like to remind bloggers in the region of a few points:

  1. If you wish to blog about “illegal topics”, make sure you use an anonymous screen name
  2. When blogging anonymously, remember not to post any articles from your personal computer Make sure you use a public PC, as all IP addresses are tracked and linked to submissions. Although Blogging Service providers are very very unlikely to give your IP address to the government if requested, it’s always better to be on the safe side
  3. If you choose to blog anonymously, don’t tell any one about it. Not even yo mama!
  4. If you are blogging with your real name from your personal PC, make sure you do not ever insult religion, president, the government or any public figures
  5. If you are blogging about religion-related topics, make sure you support your opinion with facts and references. e.g. If you are in Saudi and blogging about why women should drive, you are much safer if you use Islam to strengthen your argument than if you use “freedom” talk (Islamically, there is nothing wrong with women driving)
  6. Don’t just talk crap. It’s not only about fame. Choose your topics carefully, you should think very well before slagging some one off. If you decide to slag some one off, make sure you have a very valid reason, very strong argument, and make sure you are safe (as per point 2)
  7. Do not be stubborn. If a blog post upsets your government and they get hold of you and ask you to remove it, just remove it
  8. Do not blog when you are angry. You may write something while angry, post it, then when you calm down you kind of change your mind and delete it. There is really no “delete”. Anything posted online, stays online, either through search engines indexing or caching. It’s also very possible that some one copies your blog post before you delete it and forwards it in an email to every one he knows. Even when you delete your post, it keeps getting spread online
  9. Don’t always be negative. It’s always good to see the glass as quarter full. Your positive blog posts position you as an intellectual person rather than a rebel, and could protect you from your negative posts
  10. Finally, if you are planning for your self to be an influential blogger, do it slowly, establish credibility and make connections as you build your self. The more people you know and the more people like you, the more freedom you get. A popular person with connections is different than a rebel causing headache

A Must Use For Bloggers: Windows Live Writer

I can’t forgive myself for missing this amazing product. I was installing Windows Live Messenger today, in the selection menu, there was an app called Windows Live Writer. I thought why not install it and give it a try. People, the software blew me away. It’s a desktop tool that allows you to write and publish blogs to any blogging service out there.

The application is unbelievably perfect. I say it confidently, this is the most interesting and useful free tool ever developed by Microsoft. Ever.

Very simple. You start a new file, write your blog post, then click publish and it sends it directly to your Blog. Why is it amazing?

  • You don’t need an internet connection to start a draft blog post
  • You can very easily add Videos, Maps, Tags, Tables, Hyperlinks and even photo albums with one click, all from one page. No need to add boxes and templates
  • It has an integrated photo editor which allows you to crop and edit the pictures you paste on the page and conveniently place them wherever you want
  • It has an excellent spell checker based on Microsoft Office
  • It allows you to easily move and place objects on your draft page
  • It allows you to add plug-ins
  • I gives you the power to manage several blogs
  • It’s all installed on your desktop. This means it’s super fast as an Internet connection is not needed

From this day on, I’m going to user Windows Live Writer to write and publish all my blog posts. Give it a try, you are going to love it.

Flight Attendant Raps on Plane - Viral Marketing or UGC?

We see User Generated Content around the web all the time on blogs and YouTube. Marketers are getting more experienced in exploiting UGC websites and Social Media to promote their brands. Sometimes it’s also difficult to judge if marketing messages within a video are intentional or not.

I received the above video on Facebook, a flight attendant rapping on a plane on Southwest airlines. Although it was uploaded on 14th of March 2009, it already received 145,986 views on YouTube to date.

I don’t care if Southwest planned and executed this video or not, it’s brilliant.

Stop telling me Gates is stupid!

Give me a break. How on earth is Bill Gates stupid? I'm tired of average people calling a giant like Bill Gates stupid. Show some respect.
If it wasn't for Bill Gates, we wouldn't be where we are today. Bill Gates paved the road to the future. Bill Gates started the brainstorm that produced every innovation you see today. The fact that the mass got hold of PCs is why the World Wide Web boomed.
If it wasn't for Bill Gates, we wouldn't have internet now. Gates provided programmers and companies a reason to be in that business, a reason to innovate and a reason to compete. So don't come to me and say that Bill Gates is stupid.
Gates understood and pioneered mass market computing, mass market man! He used to work to earn computer time at school. Now we have our computers running even when we are not home. I'm not saying he is perfect, no one is. I do not agree with his business tactics, but I'm grateful and I do believe that if we are to make a statue and put it at the entrance of a technology city, it would be of Bill Gates.

Funny Cartoons About Technology

It's a fact that technology is now integrated with our life, but is this really a bad thing? I believe it's part of the evolution of mankind. We are now faster, smarter, more efficient, more effective, more reliable, more organized and more productive.

Because of facebook, I'm still in touch with hundreds of friends every day. Because of my RSS Reader I can get the news I want in one page. Because of Twitter I can talk to the world and engage in dialogue with people thousands of miles away. Because of Blogger I can express my self. Because of my email I can send and receive letters in an instant. Because of Search I have no excuse to say "I don't know" any more.

International City and the Shit Treatment Plant

I'm sick of this shit. No I'm serious, I wake up in the middle of the night to the smell of the STP (Sewage Treatment Plant) near my house in Dubai's International City, and it just smells like shit. Raise your hand if you smell what I'm talking about. Ops, I can see over 60,000 hands!

To be fair, the smell doesn't come out always. It used to come out twice a week or something around that. In the past 10 days, I've been waking up to the smell in the middle of the night daily. It's horrendous. I really cannot understand how the construction permit was given initially, knowing the area is near a Shit Treatment Plant.

I remember when I left my huge luxurious family home in Sharjah and moved to Dubai escaping traffic in 2006, on the door of Nakheel's office was a sign saying the issue (of the smell) "will be resolved in March 2007".

Excuse me? I waited a year or so, then a friend of mine published a story in Gulf News in April 2008, she quoted Rashid Al Helli, Nakheel's General Manager for International City saying: "Nakheel has commissioned and completed an independent study into the Dubai Municipality Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), which is located close to International City. The resulting report recommended upgrading the STP to accommodate the rapid growth of Dubai's development and following discussions with the municipality, upgrading work commenced on the plant in October 2007. This work is due to be completed by June 2008."

What happened after that? In June 2008, Nakheel terminated its contract with Palm Waters (The contractors) due to its inefficient performance and re-awarded the DBOO contract to Samsung Engineering and Construction Company, who will fix the problem in 3 phases.

According to Zawya.com in September 2008 the construction of phase A started. Phase A section 1 is expected to be completed in May 2009, phase A section 2 in September 2009, phase B section 2 in February 2010, and phase B section 3 in December 2010.

It's March 2009 now and my neighborhood still stinks. Is this the task we have to pay for living in a relatively affordable area of Dubai? Let's wait and see if the smell will disappear in May 2009.

My Own "Browsers Statistics"

The days of Internet Explorer are soooooooooo over!

I remember very well when Internet Explorer had over 90% market share. This market share has been dropping slowly, people are getting more aware of the better options out there.

I was just looking at statistics about my blog's visitors, currently, 51.92% of vistors to my blog are using Internet Explorer, while 26.92% are using Firefox and 14.42% are using Chrome. 5.77% goes to Safari and 0.96% goes to Blackberry.

What do I find impressive about the above statistics? 2 things. First of all, Chrome's share. Google should be very very very proud. I mean Chrome was only launched in September 2008, achieving 14% market share in six months is a big step. The browser is brilliant, its speed is its key strength. I use Chrome most of the time, but I still user Firefox every now and then to access my booksmarks through Google Tool Bar. The tool is yet to be launched on Chrome.

The other thing I found interesting was Blackberry's share. I know it's very small, but it is a share! more people are accessing the web through their Blackberries and iPhones every day. I think in a few years, Browsers statistics are going to look a lot different than they do now. There will be huge shares for Mobile users as more and more people start accessing the web through their smart phones.

Anyways, if you still use Explorer, please make sure you try Google Chrome or Firefox. They're much faster and much more secure.

Dubai bans "disrespectful" clothes and issues a list of prohibited public behaviours

Dubai Executive Council issued a new law prohibiting inappropriate behaviour in public places of the emirate. Such behaviour is nudity, kissing, wearing "disrespectful" clothes and even holding hands. I do respect and welcome Dubai's attempt to protecting its identity and cultural values from any western influence, but could something like that work in Dubai?

I think around 6 or 7 years ago, Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohamed Al Qassimi, the Ruler of Sharjah, issued a law preventing women from wearing "inappropriate" clothes, like short skirts and very tight or "low waste" pants. There was a huge buzz about it and the Police tried to inforce that, but slowly the police kind of gave up, especially after causing a lot of embarrasment to men, when their women were stopped in the street.

My question is, do you think the new law will last? I believe it's impposible to control a city like Dubai, where over 90% of its population are expatriates and really do not share the values of the Emirate. I was in Mall of Emirates 3 days ago, and saw a sign saying "disrepctful clothes" are prohibited, "skirts above the knee and tops revealing shoulders are not allowed". When I entered the mall, I reallized that according to the sign, 50% of women were supposed to get kicked out. I'm really keen to see how the government will implement the new law, I'm also keen to see how the mass will cooperate/respond to it.

I hope that opposers to this new Law think well about the previliges they have in Dubai, before they start attacking it! Let's wait and see what will happen.

You can read the full announcement in Arabic on this link, and in English on this one.

Dubai Police, Give us some privacy!

I'm not sure if you use the Traffic Fines Inquiry and Payment Service provided by Dubai Police. It's very convenient, you enter you plate number and it lists down all the fines you have with pictures (In case of speed cameras or Radars)! Amazing isn't it?

The service has one flaw though, any person can enter ANY plate number, and the website will list down all the fines for the entered number!

I have no problem if my friends check my plate number to be honest, but I know some people won't be happy if others check their records. It's a clear privacy breach. I'm sure the Dubai Police didn't design the tool like that intentionally. I think the Plate Number option should be erased, so people are forced to enter the License number or the Traffic File number if they want to retrieve a list of the fines they have to pay. It's easy to get a plate number of any car, the option of entering the File Number (available on the registration card) is way safer from a privacy perspective. Popular people in Dubai have popular plate numbers that many people know, especially single, double and triple digits. I hope Dubai Police notice this mistake and fix it ASAP.

Leaked Journalists' Salaries - The National

Shame on you!

Salaries of journalists and employees of the popular UAE daily, The National, were leaked recently and are flowing around the web. I didn't believe my eyes when I saw the list, and actually refused to look at names. How low should someone be to leak such a document? I'm not sure about the motive behind that; word on the street is that some one didn't get his bonus this year. so WHAT!?

I refuse to forward the list, or contribute to spreading it. I think we all should not forward it if we receive it, because it's none of our business what other people make. I know it’s a cliché, but remember to “Do unto others, as you would like others to do unto you”.

First Impression: Resident Evil 5

According to Gamespot.com the game will be released on March 13 on both the Xbox 360 and the PS3. I was in the Mall yesterday and found it here in Dubai, didn't wait of course and got it right away. There was a special edition pack in the store, it comes with a DVD about the making of the game, I just got the normal one!

First of all, make sure you do not install the game to the Hard drive on the Xbox 360, if you do so, the chapters will load so fast you won't get a chance to read the story. I'm talking less than a second here. I also don't like the idea that I couldn't change the player's view.

From a graphics point of view, the game is one of the best games ever. It's so good, the cinematic scenes look exactly like the game play. I just finished chapter one, the game is really engaging. I don't like the shooting mechanism (based on laser, rather than an old school pointer), but you will get used to it. Tens of Zombies, a hot partner, brilliant design, nice story (so far), guns and herbs, what more do you want? Very challenging. If you played Resident Evil 1, or 2, or 3, or 4, or didn't play any of the past editions, make sure you get it.

Going back to the game now!

Google launches interest-based advertising beta on the Google content network and YouTube

Official Announcement:

 ...................

Google aims to create more relevant ads for users, increase ROI for advertisers and increase revenues for publishers

Google has today announced the beta launch of interest-based advertising on YouTube and the Google content network.  Interest-based ads are a way for marketers to better deliver the right messages and offers to people as they surf the web.

The interest-based advertising beta will enable marketers to better connect with people based on their interests and visits to websites. Advertisers will be able to serve ads to users:

  • on the Google content network and YouTube who have previously visited their website. For example, if a user looked at football boots on a sports wear website in August, that website might want to serve ads to that user on other websites in December, alerting them to their winter sale.
  • based upon categories of interest we associate with them. These interest categories will be assigned based upon previous YouTube video views and Google content network views. For example, if someone spends a large proportion of their online time looking at videos of cars on YouTube and car review sites on the Google content network, they will be categorised as a car enthusiast and will have the opportunity to see more car-related ads on the Google content network and YouTube.

Google has also launched an innovative and transparent way for users to see and control how they are being served ads. The Ads Preferences Manager will be available immediately and enables users to view, add and remove interests, or opt out entirely from receiving interest-based ads.

 ...................

I will be discussing this in details later on :) !

Burson Marsteller: Agency from Hell

I've always been a fan of Rachel Maddow, and always will be. I watch her show at least 3 times a week, and I pretty much agree with 90% of what she says, very intelligent and unique woman indeed.

Lately, on her show, she slagged the prrrr out of Burson Marsteller, a global PR agency. Although I'm not a big fan of Burson Marsteller, ESPECIALLY in the Middle East (Asdaa), I have to say that Rachel was a bit unfair (Thanks to a friend who made me think about this). Experience in Crisis Management is one of the most important aspects that differentiate a PR firm. It's very easy to promote brands and products, but it's not easy to control bad messages or spin disasters especially when human lives are involved. To be fair, Rachel's list of Burson Marsteller’s projects reflects the expertise the firm has in reputation management. The 9/11 disaster, Blackwater USA, Babcock & Wilcox ? come on now Rachel. The segment on your show was unintentionally (I hope) a free advertising for the firm. If I was Mark Penn, I would play your video whenever I’m presenting!

Moral Police in KSA is not ISLAM

A story was published on CNN today talking about Saudis ordering 40 Lashes for elderly woman for mingling with 2 men. I’m really fed up with Saudi’s moral police(the Authority for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice), acting like maniacs claiming what they do is Islamic. They are only 3500 officers, hurting the image of Islam, a religion practiced by 1.8 BILLION people worldwide.

Please allow me to use ISLAM, to prove that the above behaviour by the “moral police” in Saudi is far from Islamic.

Representatives of the “Authority” … please read my words carefully:

First of all: didn’t God say, in the Holy Quran, in Surah An-Nur, Verses number 27 and 28:

“O you who believe! Enter not houses other than your own, until you have asked permission and greeted those in them, that is better for you, in order that you may remember.

And if you find no one therein, still, enter not until permission has been given. And if you are asked to go back, go back, for it is purer for you, and Allah is All-Knower of what you do.”

Now, who and what on earth gave you the permission to enter peoples’ houses without their permission?

Second, the rule prohibiting a man, to be isolated with a woman, is taken from Prophet Mohammad’s (Peace Be Upon Him) Hadith, when he said: “A man must not isolate a woman ....” my question is: How does this rule apply to 2 men and a woman? How does it also apply to 2 men and an OLD woman?

Didn’t Prophet Mohammad set this rule for people to be as far away from adultery as possible? How could a situation involving 2 men and an old woman end up with Adultery?!!

Third, didn’t God say in the Quran, also in Surah An-Nur, verse 60:

“And as for women past child-bearing who do not expect wed-lock, it is no sin on them if they discard their (outer) clothing in such a way as not to show their adornment. But to refrain (i.e. not to discard their outer clothing) is better for them. And Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower.”

If the rule of Hijab (covering the head) is dropped when it comes to women who fall under this category (meaning old women, are not considered a temptation), hence, should not also the rule of isolation be discarded?

Fourth, Islamic Law comes from the Quran and Sunnah (teachings of Prophet Mohammad), I challenge you, to get me 1 verse from either Quran or Sunnah, that sets a 40 lashes punishment for ANY sin.

The 100 lashes punishment mentioned in Quran is for people committing Adultery, and it’s only executed IF there are 4 witnesses. Again from Surah An-Nur, Verse 2:

“The woman and the man guilty of illegal sexual intercourse, flog each of them with a hundred stripes. Let not pity withhold you in their case, in a punishment prescribed by Allah, if you believe in Allah and the Last Day.”

My question is: Who gave you the authority to modify this Law to 40 lashes? Who gave you the authority to set a lashes punishment for isolation?

Fifth, did the officer have other 4 witnesses with him when he accused the poor woman with a Vice?

I thought God said in Quran, ALSO in Surah An-Nur Verse 4: that a man accusing a woman (without producing 4 witnesses) should receive 80 lashes himself!

“And those who accuse chaste women, and produce not four witnesses, flog them with eighty stripes, and reject their testimony forever, they indeed are the liars, rebellious, disobedient to Allah.”

How did the officer claim there was something wrong going on, without any other witnesses?

Sixth, since when there was a punishment for isolation any ways?! Since when there was a punishment for even kissing! Ma’ez Ibn Malik commited Adultery, then felt so bad about it he confessed to Prophet Mohammad Peace Be Upon Him. He confessed because he wanted to receive the punishment here, rather than the Hereafter.

Ma’ez explicitly told the Prohpet: “O Prophet, I fornicated”, the prophet said: “You probably kissed!”, Ma’ez said: “I fornicated”. The Prophet said: “You probably flirted”. Ma’ez said: “I fornicated”. The Prophet said: “You probably looked!”. Ma’ez said:” No I fornicated”, and that’s when the Prophet Peace Be Upon Him ordered the man’s punishment. (Story is documented in several books; one of them is Book of Bukhari, Hadith number 6824)

The above story clearly demonstrates that a person should only receive a punishment in case of sexual intercourse. The prophet was even giving the man a chance to get away with it! (and repent), but the man insisted on receiving his punishment.

Seventh, you give the woman 40 lashes, and a prison sentence? I thought according to Islam, if you receive any punishment based on the book of God, or the teachings of his prophet, you don’t go to jail. Did god mention a prison sentence in Quran in case of Adultery? NO (Verse above).

Finally, why should the woman be deported? I challenge you to give me an example from the times of Prophet Mohammad, from the Quran, or from the Sunnah, where a Muslim, a Jew, or a Christian, got deported from the Islamic State for ANY reason.

May Allah liberate Muslims in KSA from your stupidity.

And I thought I should be a citizen …

During my trip to Petra, I had a guest with me from Kuwait. After the long walk around the old city, everyone went to rest while this guest and I decided to go out of the hotel and smoke some Sheesha.

We chatted about many things, politics, work, religion, sports, women, business … you name it. One thing though kept me thinking for the rest of my trip is where he is from. Basically, I asked my guest how long he’s been in Kuwait, he told me, he’s been there for 51 years, and he is still not a Kuwaiti citizen!

Seriously, how much should a person serve a country before he/she is recognized? I understand how uneducated or unemployed people can be a burden, but a person who’s been in a country for 51 years, working and working and working until he reached a high level in society is definitely not a burden and should become a citizen of that country.

I’ve been in UAE for 27 years, I was never a burden to it, and I’m still a “foreigner”. What should it take to become part of a country?

The guy I’m talking about used to be a Jordanian citizen, but after he’d lived in Kuwait forever he realized he couldn’t go back to Jordan. In the Gulf War when people were fleeing out of Kuwait, he went to Canada, stayed there for 4 years, became a Canadian citizen and came back to Kuwait as a Canadian … of course his salary preposterously quadrupled.

You know, things like that make me confused about my own identity. I do carry a Syrian passport, but I never lived in Syria. Am I Syrian? I do not carry an Emirati passport, but I lived in UAE all my life, am I Emirati? I received American education for 7 years (Undergraduate, and Graduate), I have also been to the states frequently and lived there for a little while, Am I American? I submitted my papers for immigration to Canada around 2 years ago; I’m expecting to become a Canadian citizen in 3 years. Is this really going to make me Canadian? I have a friend who was born in Germany; he has a Syrian passport and a Canadian passport and a German 1, but lived in UAE all his life. He is recongized as a citizin by 3 countries he never lived in, and not by the country where he's been all his life.

That’s just messed up.

A conversation with Majid: a wise 15 years old Bedouin

Went to Jordan for the first time, straight from the airport to Petra. I couldn’t believe that I never been there. The place is amazing. I’m not going to get into Petra’s history, you can get that from Wikipedia, but the thing I’m going to talk about is a youngster I came across named Majid.

After walking for 4 hours exploring a touching history of might and perfection, we decided it’s time to get back to the hotel. I wasn’t very tired to walk back, but I thought it would be a good experience to ride back on a donkey. A young kid sitting in a corner under the rocks offered to drop me back on one of his donkies, I said yes, and convinced a journalist who was with us to get on the other one. As we climbed the mountain back to the top, while Majid the little kid walked with us, a conversation with him went like this:

Me: “What’s your name?”

Majid: “My name is Majid, what about you?”

Me: “My name is Mohammad. How old are you?”

Majid: “I’m 15”

Me: “How come you are here and not in school?”

Majid: “I don’t go to school, I have to work”

Me: “Why?”

Majid: “I chose to work. I need the money. I’m helping my brother build a house because he is getting married; I’m also building a house for myself”.

Me: “Wow. Don’t you get tired coming down and up the mountain all day?”

Majid: “I used to, when I started 3 years ago but now I’m used to it”.

Me: “You have nice donkies! How old is the one I’m riding on?”

Majid: “He is 20 years old”.

Me: “Are you serious? How old does a donkey live?”

Majid: “What?! You can’t say that. This is a soul, and it lives as long as it’s meant to live, as long as Allah wants”

Me: “I understand that, and agree with you, but what I’m asking is what the average life of a donkey is? You know, like the average life of a man is 60 or 70 or something like that.”

Majid: “You can’t say that. This is a soul, we are souls. I don’t know how long I will live. You don’t know how long you will live. I might drop dead today, or tomorrow. There is no “expected” age. A soul dies when it least expects it”.

I just didn’t know what to say back to him, so I tried to change the subject.

Me: “Do you like your job?”

Majid: “Yes I do, I meet a lot of tourists here, but you know, I don’t talk to all of them”

Me: “Why?”

Majid: “Some don’t really like to talk to us, and some like you are nice. It’s very important to be nice to people. I try to be nice always. You know, money is not important. What’s important is friendship because it stays forever. If I’m nice to people, they will come back to me one day.”

Again, I didn’t have anything to say back, so I changed the subject.

Thank you Etisalat for the iPhone

Wow. The iPhone was launched in the US on the 29th of June 2007, and finally, we got it here in the UAE.
Unfortunately, what we have here is not quite what the normal world has. I'm not going to get into the problems facing the iPhone users in UAE, this is about the price these users have to pay.

Before I get into the breathtaking promotion offered by Etisalat, let me share with you how much the iPhone costs in the US with AT&T.

The device itself costs 199 (728 AED) if you are going with the 8 GB, and 299 (1094 AED) if you are going with the 16GB. AT&T offers, like Etisalat, different data plans but of course at different costs.

With AT&T, you can get 450 minutes PLUS 5000 night and weekend minutes PLUS UNLIMITED internet access and data downloads, for 69.99$ (256 AED). This doesn't come with text messages plan, you can add an UNLIMITED text messages plan for 20$ (73 AED) only, or you can go with 500 msgs for 5$ (18.3 AED) !

If the above is not enough for you, you can get an UNLIMITED package, which means, unlimited internet, talk time, messages, EVERYTHING is unlimited, for 129.99$ (475 AED).

Please read the above carefully before I remind you what Etisalat is offering. Below is the cheapest, and most expensive options by Etisalat:

The device itself costs, 2646 AED (723$) for 8 GB and 3090 AED for 16 GB (844$). The plan is 199 AED (54.3$) a month for 120 minutes only of talk time plus 125 SMS and only 500 MB a month for data. The iPhone is free (thanks Etisalat) if you go with 643 AED (176 $) a month plan, which provides you 500 minutes a month, plus 300 SMS and 2 GB of data.

Have mercy!
